Shenyang
Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning province and the largest city of China's northeastern rust belt, historically the seat of the early Qing dynasty. With a metropolitan population of around nine million, it is a major heavy-industry and transport center known for its imperial and revolutionary history. The climate is cold temperate, with warm summers and long, cold, dry winters. Its foremost landmark is the Shenyang Imperial Palace, a smaller counterpart to Beijing's Forbidden City, alongside the Zhaoling tomb in Beiling Park and Marshal Zhang's Mansion. Northeastern cuisine features hearty dishes like Laobian dumplings, sweet-and-sour guobaorou, and sauerkraut-and-pork stews. A growing metro network, Taoxian International Airport, and high-speed rail connect it to Dalian, Changchun, and Beijing. For an international student, Shenyang offers low living costs, strong engineering and medical universities, and an authentic experience of industrial northern China.
