North China University of Science and Technology in Tangshan is a large public university formed by merging engineering and medical institutions rooted in the coal-and-steel city of Tangshan, founded in 1958. It combines strong programs in metallurgy, mining, materials and safety engineering with a full medical school and public-health program, an unusual breadth reflecting the region's heavy industry and its post-earthquake reconstruction. The university operates affiliated hospitals and national and provincial engineering laboratories, serving the iron-and-steel and energy economy of northern Hebei.
