Wenzhou
Wenzhou is a coastal prefecture city in southeastern Zhejiang famous for its bold private-enterprise culture, often called the birthplace of China's market economy. Its merchants built vast networks producing shoes, eyeglasses, lighters and low-voltage electrical goods, and Wenzhou natives run businesses in cities across Europe and the world. Ringed by mountains and cut off from the rest of Zhejiang by rough terrain, it developed a distinct dialect and an independent, entrepreneurial spirit. Scenic spots include Yandang Mountain's dramatic peaks and the pristine Nanxi River valley of ancient villages. A new metro, high-speed rail and an international airport now connect this once-isolated city to the country.
