📖 About the university

Wenzhou Vocational and Technical University is a public university in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, established as Wenzhou Vocational and Technical College in 1999 with the approval of the Ministry of Education, at a time when Wenzhou was already emerging as one of China's most dynamic centres of private manufacturing and entrepreneurship. In May 2026 the Ministry of Education approved the college's conversion into a full vocational-bachelor's university under its present name, simultaneously dissolving the former college structure, making it one of the newest members of Zhejiang's public higher-education system. The university is located in the dedicated Wenzhou Higher Education Park in the city's Ouhai district, on a campus covering about 837 mu with roughly 239,000 square metres of floor space, representing a total investment of more than 740 million yuan. It is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes, but its location in Wenzhou, long famous for small-goods manufacturing, footwear, eyewear and light industry, gives its applied engineering and business programmes strong ties to the local private economy.

The university currently enrolls close to 9,600 students and offers programmes concentrated in mechanical and electrical engineering, business and trade, information technology, and fashion and light-industry design, disciplines that mirror the manufacturing clusters for which the Wenzhou region is famous nationwide. As a recently upgraded vocational-bachelor's university it represents part of a broader wave of Chinese vocational colleges being elevated to bachelor's-degree status in the mid-2020s to meet demand for more highly skilled applied talent. At present it enrolls primarily domestic Chinese students and does not advertise a dedicated Chinese-language programme for international applicants. Its close alignment with Wenzhou's entrepreneurial manufacturing economy gives it a distinct regional identity among Zhejiang's growing number of applied, vocational-bachelor's universities.
