Jixi

In Heilongjiang province

Jixi is a coal-mining city in far eastern Heilongjiang, set against the Russian border and the great Xingkai (Khanka) Lake. The lake, shared with Russia, is a vast wetland reserve rich in birds and fish. The city is also known for Zhenbao Island, site of a famous 1969 border clash. A large Korean-Chinese community gives Jixi its celebrated cold-noodle cuisine. Winters are long and snowy. For an international student, Jixi offers lakeside nature, borderland history, and distinctive food.
