Fuzhou

Fuzhou is the capital of Fujian province, a historic port city on the Min River facing Taiwan across the strait. With a metropolitan population of around eight million, it blends a well-preserved old quarter with a fast-modernizing economy and is a hometown to many overseas Chinese. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Its signature attraction is the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys historic district, alongside Gushan Mountain, West Lake Park, and the old Mawei shipyard that pioneered China's modern navy. Fujian cuisine is delicate and seafood-rich, most famously the luxurious Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, along with springy fish balls and lychee pork. A growing metro network, Changle International Airport, and high-speed rail connect it to Xiamen, Hangzhou, and Shanghai.
