A chemist-turned-entrepreneur, Wang founded BYD in 1995 as a battery maker in Shenzhen and led its entry into carmaking in 2003. Under his leadership BYD became the world's largest new-energy vehicle manufacturer. He is one of the most prominent figures in Chinese tech industry.
📖 About the company
Founded in Shenzhen in 1995 as a battery maker, BYD entered the car business in 2003 by acquiring Qinchuan Auto. It stopped making pure petrol cars in 2022 to focus entirely on EVs and plug-in hybrids, and by 2023 was the world's largest new-energy vehicle maker. Its in-house technologies include the Blade Battery, DM-i super hybrid system and e-Platform 3.0. BYD sold over 4.27 million vehicles in 2024 and is expanding rapidly across the Middle East, Europe, Southeast Asia and Latin America. In China its line-up spans budget cars to premium brands such as Denza and Yangwang.
