📖 About the university
Yellow River Conservancy Technical University is a public university in Kaifeng, Henan province, whose history stretches back to March 1929, when it was founded as the Henan Provincial School of Water Conservancy Engineering; over the following decades it evolved through numerous incarnations, including the National Yellow River Basin Water Conservancy Engineering College and schools directly administered by the Ministry of Water Resources and the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, before becoming Yellow River Conservancy Technical College in 1998 and being upgraded to a full vocational-bachelor's university in 2025. The university is jointly built by the national Ministry of Water Resources and the Henan provincial government, was named among the first group of national model higher vocational colleges in 2006, and was selected for China's high-level "Double High Plan" vocational schools programme in 2019, reflecting its status as one of the country's most established institutions dedicated to water-conservancy education. Its enduring specialisation, built up over nearly a century, lies in water conservancy engineering together with related fields such as civil and architectural engineering, surveying and mapping, hydraulic structures, information engineering and economics and management, disciplines that flow directly from its founding mission of training engineers for flood control and water-resource management on the Yellow River. It is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes, being instead one of China's leading applied, vocational-bachelor's institutions in its field.
The university's campus in Kaifeng covers about 1,780 mu and includes a well-known central lake, and it enrolls close to 15,000 students taught by more than 850 faculty members. As a school historically tied to the Yellow River Conservancy Commission, it retains close links to China's national flood-control and hydropower authorities and continues to supply much of the technical workforce for water-management projects along the Yellow River basin. At present it serves primarily Chinese students pursuing technical and engineering careers and does not advertise a dedicated Chinese-language programme for international applicants. Its near-century of continuous operation, its official designation as a state-level demonstration vocational college, and its direct historical link to Yellow River water management make it a distinctive, deeply rooted specialist university within China's applied higher-education system.
