Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA), established in 1953, is the leading higher art institution in southern China and one of the country's eight major fine-art academies. Rooted in the commercial, design-driven culture of the Pearl River Delta, it is especially strong in design and industrial design alongside traditional Chinese painting, oil painting and sculpture. Its graduates are prominent across China's design, animation, advertising and manufacturing industries.
