📖 About the university
Shanxi Institute of Energy is an applied-science undergraduate institution run by the Shanxi provincial government and approved by the Ministry of Education, with its main campus at 63 Daxue Street in the university park of Yuci district, Jinzhong, and a second site at 29 Xutan West Street in Taiyuan. Its predecessor began in 1980, when the provincial coal administration set up a preparatory office for a coal-mine cadre school in Taiyuan planned for five hundred students; basic construction was largely finished by 1983 and short refresher courses for mine and department heads began soon after. In June 1984 the provincial government approved the conversion of that school into the Shanxi Coal Management Cadre College, an adult higher-education institution with a secondary-technical division attached. The provincial government approved the creation of a Shanxi Coal College on the same base in May 2009, the name later changed to Shanxi Institute of Energy, and the school took its first regular undergraduate intake in 2014 under the banner of the energy college of Taiyuan University of Technology before the Ministry of Education formally approved the new institute in March 2016; the institute and the Shanxi Coal Management Cadre College still operate under two names at once. Teaching is organised in departments of mining engineering, safety engineering, geology and surveying engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, electric power engineering and automation, energy and power engineering, resources and environmental engineering, new energy engineering, computer and information engineering, and economics and management, offering about twenty undergraduate programmes; as of May 2025 it taught 8,048 full-time students with 439 staff. The whole curriculum is deliberately built around coal, electric power and renewable energy, training engineers and managers for energy enterprises and for the economy of Shanxi, China's largest coal-producing province, and the institute is listed as a key project of the Shanxi comprehensive reform pilot zone, a provincial applied-undergraduate pilot institution and a national pilot institution for industry-education integration among local universities. For a student interested in mining, power systems or the energy transition, it is one of the most single-mindedly energy-focused undergraduate schools in northern China.
