📖 About the university
Xi'an International University is a private university in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, founded in 1992 as a service-training college; with the approval of the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education it became one of the first private institutions in the province authorised to award diplomas by examination in 1996, was upgraded to a vocational college in 2000, and in March 2005 was recognised by China's Ministry of Education as an undergraduate college under its present name, gaining the right to confer bachelor's degrees in 2009. The university now enrolls about 20,000 students taught by around 1,700 faculty and staff across a campus of 1.26 square kilometres, and it is organised into eight colleges offering 67 fields of study spanning management, economics, humanities, medicine, engineering, agriculture and the arts. In 2009 it established the College of Entrepreneurship, the first of its kind founded by a private Chinese university, and it has since built a distinctive identity around applied, entrepreneurship-oriented education, including a training platform for a joint MBA and entrepreneurship qualification launched in 2010. As a private university it is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes, but it has grown into one of the largest and most established private universities in northwest China.
The university has also invested heavily in traditional culture education, founding the Qi Fang Academy of Classical Learning in 2014 to combine moral education with postgraduate and liberal-arts study, and the Laozi Academy in 2020, the first traditional-culture academy of its kind housed within a Chinese university college, with departments covering Chinese studies, painting, music, calligraphy, wushu, tea art and chess. Its campus in Xi'an's Yanta district is built around Yuhua Lake and includes one of the largest multipurpose sports centres in northwestern China, opened in 2017. The university enrolls both Chinese and a smaller number of international students and employs some foreign faculty, giving it a somewhat more internationally engaged profile than many private Chinese universities of its type, although it has not been confirmed to offer a dedicated Chinese-language pathway specifically designed for international degree-seekers. Its scale, historical depth for a private institution, and distinctive blend of entrepreneurship training and classical Chinese cultural education make it one of the more distinctive private universities in Shaanxi province.
