📖 About the university

Tongren Polytechnic University is a comprehensive vocational university in Tongren, Guizhou province, jointly built by China's National Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Guizhou provincial government. Its immediate predecessor was formed in 2002 through the merger of five prefectural schools: the Tongren Prefecture Agricultural School (founded 1956), the Tongren Prefecture Health School (founded 1958), the Tongren Prefecture Finance School (founded 1978), the Tongren Prefecture Advanced Vocational-Technical School (founded 1992) and the Tongren Prefecture Commercial Workers' Secondary Specialized School (founded 1987), while the institution traces its earliest educational roots to an agricultural programme run by the Jiangkou branch of the National No. 3 Middle School in 1938. Before its upgrade to bachelor's level, the college was recognised as a backbone institution under the National Demonstrative Higher Vocational College Construction Plan, a National Quality Higher-Vocational Specialist College, and a member of China's 'Characteristic High-Level Vocational Schools and Specialties' construction plan, as well as a designated national training base for rural-revitalisation talent. The university offers a genuinely multidisciplinary curriculum spanning agriculture, medicine, science, engineering, economics and management, a breadth unusual among China's newer vocational undergraduate universities and a direct legacy of its five founding schools. Tongren itself sits in the mountainous northeast of Guizhou province near the borders with Hunan and Chongqing, close to the scenic Fanjing Mountain UNESCO World Heritage site, giving the university a strong regional identity tied to ethnic-minority communities and rural development. As a vocational undergraduate institution rather than a Project 985/211 or Double First-Class university, its mission centres on training applied technical talent for Guizhou's agricultural, healthcare and rural-development sectors. The university currently serves primarily domestic students, and formal international-admissions arrangements are not yet a significant feature of its programme.
