📖 About the university

Harbin Institute of Petroleum is a private undergraduate university in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, specialising in petroleum and engineering disciplines. It was founded in 2003 in the oil city of Daqing and later relocated to Harbin, taking its current name in 2012 and passing the national undergraduate teaching evaluation in 2020. The institute has eight secondary colleges and six teaching departments, offering around thirty-five undergraduate programmes led by engineering and complemented by economics, management, literature, arts and education. Its mechatronic engineering is a provincial key discipline, while petroleum engineering and Internet-of-Things engineering are provincial first-class programmes. In 2024 it was approved as a provincial master's degree cultivation unit, an unusual distinction for a private institution. It serves the petroleum, equipment-manufacturing and information industries of northeastern China.

🌆 About Harbin

Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang province in China's far northeast, a city shaped by strong Russian influence in its architecture and culture. With a metropolitan population of around ten million, it sits on the Songhua River and is often called the ice city. Its climate is severely continental, with warm summers but long, extremely cold, snowy winters that make it famous for winter tourism. The landmark Saint Sophia Cathedral, the European-style Central Street, Sun Island, and the spectacular Ice and Snow World festival draw visitors from across the country. Local food blends Northeastern staples like sweet-and-sour guobaorou with Russian-influenced red sausage and dense dalieba bread. A growing metro, Taiping International Airport, and high-speed rail connect it to Changchun, Shenyang, and Beijing. For an international student, Harbin offers affordable living, respected universities, and a truly distinctive winter culture, though newcomers should be ready for genuinely harsh cold.
