Shaanxi University of Science and Technology in Xi'an is a public university that grew out of China's light-industry education system, founded in 1958 as the country's flagship school for leather, paper-making and light-industry technology. It remains a national leader in these fields — its papermaking and leather-science programs are among the best in China — and has expanded strongly into materials science, chemistry and industrial design. The university hosts national and provincial key laboratories and cooperates closely with the light-industry and materials sectors.
