📖 About the university
Geely University is a private undergraduate university founded in 2000 by the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the Fortune Global 500 automotive conglomerate that also owns Volvo Cars, and it was created to train applied engineering and technical talent for China's automotive and manufacturing industries. It began as a vocational institution in Beijing's Changping district, was upgraded to bachelor's-degree status in 2014 as Beijing Geely University, and in 2020 the university relocated its main campus to the city of Jianyang, a satellite city administered by Chengdu, Sichuan, at which point it adopted its current name of Geely University; its original Beijing campus was later absorbed into Peking University. As a young, industry-founded private institution, Geely University is not part of the Project 985, Project 211 or Double First-Class programmes that define China's most elite research universities. The university enrolls more than 20,000 students and around 800 staff across roughly seventeen constituent schools, including its School of Intelligent Manufacturing, School of Intelligent Connected and New Energy Vehicles, School of Electronic Information Engineering, School of Aerospace, Business School, Saxo Fintech College and School of Art and Design, with strong programmes in vehicle engineering, computer science and financial technology.
Because it is owned by one of China's largest private industrial groups, the university is closely tied to the automotive and technology sector, running a joint postdoctoral research station with the Geely group and emphasising practical, industry-linked training over pure research. Its purpose-built campus in Jianyang covers more than 2,000 mu (roughly 133 hectares) and was designed as an applied, research-oriented private university intended to serve the growing automotive and electronics industries of western China. At present the university enrolls primarily domestic students and does not yet advertise a dedicated Chinese-language pathway for international applicants, reflecting its status as a newly relocated, still-developing institution rather than an established destination for international study. Its close corporate backing nonetheless gives students distinctive access to internships and career paths across the Geely group's global automotive and mobility businesses.
