Tsinghua University is a public research university in Beijing, founded in 1911 on the site of the former Qing dynasty imperial gardens, from which it takes its name and much of its distinctive garden campus in the north-west of the capital. It is a member of the elite C9 League and is designated under both Project 985 and Project 211 as well as the national Double First-Class initiative, which together mark it as one of China's most prestigious institutions. Historically it grew from a preparatory school for students bound for study in the United States into a comprehensive research university, and its graduates are prominent across Chinese industry, science, government, and academia. The university is especially renowned for engineering and computer science, and it also has highly regarded schools of architecture, economics and management, and medicine.
