📖 About the university

Chongqing Vocational Institute of Engineering is a public full-time higher vocational institution established by the Chongqing municipal government and supervised by the Chongqing Municipal Education Commission. It was founded in 1951 as the Coal Mining Industrial School of the South-West Industry Department, and its long association with mining, surveying and safety engineering still shapes its academic identity. The institute is a construction unit of the national plan for Chinese-characteristic high-level higher vocational schools and specialisms, and in 2021 it was also selected for Chongqing's own high-level vocational school and specialism-cluster plan. Its campus lies in Jiangjin District, the home town of Marshal Nie Rongzhen, on the upper Yangtze south-west of central Chongqing, and covers more than 1,500 mu with over 400,000 square metres of buildings. It teaches over seventeen thousand full-time students together with about sixty international students and some three thousand adult learners, organised into eleven teaching units including schools of intelligent manufacturing and transportation, big data and Internet of Things, civil engineering, finance and tourism, resources and safety, surveying and geographic information, art and design engineering, and an International School. The presence of a dedicated International School and a standing intake of overseas students makes it one of the more internationally open vocational institutions in south-west China.

🌆 About Chongqing

Chongqing is a sprawling southwestern municipality built across steep hills where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet, giving it the nickname the mountain city. Its urban core holds around 16 million people, and its dramatic, multi-level terrain of bridges, tunnels, and cliffside buildings is unlike anywhere else in China. The climate is humid subtropical, with famously hot, humid summers and mild, often foggy winters. Landmarks include the glowing Hongya Cave stilt complex, the old Yangtze River cableway, Ciqikou ancient town, and the light-rail line that runs straight through a residential tower at Liziba. The city is the birthplace of fiery Chongqing hotpot, alongside spicy xiaomian noodles and laziji chicken. A distinctive metro and monorail system, Jiangbei International Airport, and high-speed rail connect its complex geography and the wider region. For an international student, Chongqing offers low living costs, dramatic scenery, and an intense, unforgettable urban experience.
