📖 About the university

Qianjiang College of Hangzhou Normal University is an independent college in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang, founded in 1999 in the first wave of independent colleges created by Zhejiang's public universities. It operates under Hangzhou Normal University — the city's comprehensive university best known nationally as the alma mater of Alibaba founder Jack Ma — and takes its name from the Qiantang River. As an independent college it teaches bachelor programmes that draw on the parent's strengths across teacher education, humanities, arts and health: education and early-childhood tracks, Chinese and foreign languages, broadcasting and media arts, music and dance, nursing and health programmes, together with economics, management and computing majors serving Hangzhou's service-and-digital economy. Students benefit from the parent university's academic oversight while entering with lower score thresholds, and the Hangzhou location — a wealthy tech metropolis with an enormous demand for teachers, nurses and media workers — anchors graduate employment. Like Zhejiang's other remaining independent colleges it has faced the national push for conversion or restructuring, but it continues to operate under its founding name. Teaching is in Chinese and enrolment is domestic.

🌆 About Hangzhou

Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province, famed for its scenic beauty and, in recent decades, as a leading center of China's technology and e-commerce industry. With a metropolitan population of around 12 million, it pairs classical landscapes with the modern headquarters of major internet companies. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and cool, damp winters. The city is defined by the celebrated West Lake, ringed by pagodas, temples, and gardens, alongside the ancient Lingyin Temple and the historic Grand Canal. Local cuisine is refined and delicate, including West Lake vinegar fish, Dongpo braised pork, and Longjing tea shrimp. A rapidly expanding metro, Xiaoshan International Airport, and high-speed rail place Shanghai less than an hour away. For an international student, Hangzhou offers a beautiful, comfortable setting, strong universities, and a thriving tech and startup scene.
