📖 About the university

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a public research university formally established in 1963 through the federation of three earlier colleges, New Asia, Chung Chi, and United College, and it remains the only university in Hong Kong to use a residential collegiate system, today numbering nine constituent colleges. Its expansive, hilly campus in Sha Tin overlooks the Tolo Harbour and is among the largest and greenest of any university in the territory. The university is organised into eight faculties, covering arts, business administration, education, engineering, law, medicine, science, and social science, and it uniquely embraces bilingual instruction in both Chinese and English. CUHK reached its best-ever position of 32nd in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and is particularly distinguished in medicine, business, geography, communication and translation, and biomedical sciences. It has produced Nobel laureates and Fields and Turing award winners among its faculty and affiliates, and its founding mission emphasised combining Chinese and Western scholarship. With a broad range of exchange programmes and a substantial non-local student population, it is well suited to students who want a rigorous, bilingual education rooted in both Chinese culture and international research.

🌆 About Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region on the southern coast of China and one of the world's leading financial, trading, and logistics hubs, where Cantonese Chinese culture blends seamlessly with a British-influenced international outlook. Built around one of the finest deep-water harbours in the world, the territory packs a dramatic skyline of skyscrapers against steep green mountains and outlying islands, with Victoria Harbour at its heart. Its climate is humid subtropical, bringing hot, humid summers with occasional typhoons and mild, dry winters. English and Chinese are both official languages, and the city is famous for its efficient MTR metro, double-decker trams and buses, and Hong Kong International Airport, one of the busiest in the world. Everyday life mixes Michelin-starred dining and dim sum teahouses with street markets, temples, hiking trails, and beaches, all within easy reach. For an international student, Hong Kong offers a concentration of world-ranked universities, a genuinely global environment, and easy travel across Asia, though living costs and rents are among the highest in the region.
