📖 About the university

Sichuan University of Culture and Arts is a private arts university in the economic development zone of Mianyang, the northern Sichuan city designated as China's Science and Technology City, and it says it is the only higher-education institution in the country whose name combines culture and art. Its origins lie in 2001, when the Sichuan Conservatory of Music set up a teaching district at Mianyang alongside several other second-level colleges in Chengdu; in April 2006 the Mianyang operation was raised to the independently constituted Mianyang College of Arts of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. In 2014 the Ministry of Education approved its conversion into a free-standing arts institution and it was renamed Sichuan University of Culture and Arts. The campus on East Airport Road covers about 1,100 mu and the university teaches more than ten thousand students, organised into schools of music, dance, media, culture, fine arts, psychology and education, and vocational education. Its inheritance from a conservatory is visible in the strength of performance training — music performance, vocal and instrumental study, dance and choreography, drama and film performance — while the media, culture and fine arts schools extend into design, broadcasting, cultural management and heritage work. Several distinctive institutions sit on campus: a Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Research Academy, a training arm of an arts service centre authorised by the culture ministry, a world culture and education foundation set up to help students from poor families start businesses, and the Wang Meng Literature and Art Museum, described as the largest museum devoted to a contemporary Chinese writer. The motto is to establish the fundamentals, to be practical and to innovate; teaching is in Chinese and the intake is mainly domestic, but for anyone interested in Chinese performing arts, folk traditions and intangible heritage the campus is an unusual concentration of that work outside the big conservatory cities.
