📖 About the university

Xinxiang University is a public full-time undergraduate institution approved by the Ministry of Education, on the eastern stretch of Jinsui Avenue in the Hongqi district of Xinxiang, a city on the Henan plain north of the Yellow River. The university dates its teaching history to 1949 and describes its own inheritance as both revolutionary and reform-era, and it took its present form in 2007 when Xinxiang Normal Higher Vocational College, Pingyuan University and the Xinxiang Municipal College of Education were merged and upgraded into a single undergraduate institution. The campus covers about 1,708 mu, roughly 1.14 square kilometres, which makes it one of the larger provincial campuses in northern Henan. Twenty-four secondary colleges deliver more than sixty undergraduate programmes spanning nine discipline categories — engineering, science, management, economics, education, literature, art, history and medicine — among them the schools of Chinese language and literature, business, mechanical and electrical engineering, computer and information engineering, mathematics and statistics, education science, music and fine arts. Enrolment is large for a non-provincial-capital university: some 26,000 full-time undergraduate and junior-college students plus around 17,000 continuing-education students, drawn from 25 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, taught by a faculty of roughly 1,350. The merger of a normal college, a comprehensive university and a college of education left the institution with a double character that still shapes it — a strong applied engineering and information-technology side alongside a substantial teacher-training and arts side — and it functions as one of the main suppliers of schoolteachers and technicians for northern Henan. Xinxiang itself sits close to the Taihang Mountains and about forty minutes from Zhengzhou by high-speed rail, so students have easy access to a provincial capital while living in a considerably cheaper city; teaching is in Chinese and the intake is domestic.
