The station sits on the south side of Sanjiaocheng, Haiyan's county seat, a short taxi ride or walk from the town center; buses and taxis continue toward Qinghai Lake (about 30 km) and the former 'Atomic City' nuclear research base via a dedicated spur line.

Traveller notes

Opened on 1 May 1984 and rebuilt at its present site in 2009 during double-tracking of the Xining–Golmud line, Haiyan is a fourth-class station on the Qinghai–Tibet Railway, electrified in 2011. Sitting at high altitude on the Tibetan Plateau roughly 97 km from Xining, it is the closest railhead to Qinghai Lake and to China's first atomic-bomb research base, reached via the branch West Sea Railway.
