Zanbuhu (Hongguang) Mosque

赞布呼清真寺
📍 Xunhua · Chahandusi Township 🏛️ 1939

📜 About & history

Zanbuhu Mosque, also called Hongguang Mosque, is the only mosque in China designed and built by Red Army soldiers. After the defeat of the Western Route Army in 1936, over 400 captured soldiers were sent to Xunhua for forced labour and built the mosque between 1939 and 1946, secretly working five-pointed stars and hammer-and-sickle motifs into its carved bricks. Its 4-mu courtyard holds a prayer hall and call-to-prayer tower; it became a provincial protected site in 1998 and a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in 2006, and houses a Western Route Army memorial hall.
