Yongning Mosque was, like the South City Mosque, founded under the Yuan by Sayyid Ajall Shams al-Din, governor of Yunnan province. Originally on Donglai Street by the fish market, it was known as the 「Donglai Street Mosque」 and was destroyed at the end of the Yuan. Rebuilt in the Ming Yongli era (1647-1661) as Yongning Mosque and once the grandest in the provincial capital, it was again burned in 1856 during the suppression of the Hui uprising. The present buildings date from 1898 (Guangxu 24): a courtyard layout whose gable-and-hip timber prayer hall, roofed in green glazed tiles, bears the plaque 「朝真殿」.
