Yan'an Mosque was built in 1940 in Yan'an, the capital of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region. The Border Region Government allocated 7,000 yuan for its construction, and its completion ceremony was held on 7 October 1940, attended by Eighth Route Army Commander-in-Chief Zhu De and other Border Region leaders. In September 1940 Mao Zedong personally inscribed the name "Qingzhensi" (Mosque) for the building — the only time he ever inscribed a name for a religious site; the original inscribed stone is now a national first-class cultural relic held in the Yan'an Revolutionary Memorial Hall.

Open for the five daily prayers, with the main Friday Jumu'ah gathering around midday; ablution (wudu) facilities are on site. Modest dress is requested.
