📜 About & history
Weizhou's original mosque was built in the Ming dynasty in traditional Chinese palatial style and was expanded and renovated three times during the Qing dynasty and the Republican era. A large new Grand Mosque was erected in 2016 in an 'Arabic' idiom, with carved white stone, tall minarets, large onion domes, and golden crescent spires. In 2018-2019 government plans to demolish this new mosque triggered widespread public protests. Following the standoff, the building was remodeled in Chinese style, its dome and minarets replaced with Chinese-style pagoda roofs, making it a prominent example of the 'sinicization' of mosques in Ningxia.
