The earliest Muslims arrived in Wangyemiao (the old name for Ulanhot), led by settlers such as Bai Guozhen, Feng Zhenshan, and Ma Baoshan. By 1933 there were more than 30 Muslim households, who pooled funds to purchase three mud-brick houses to serve as the area's first mosque, formally opened after renovation in 1934. By 1938 the Muslim population had grown to over 120 households (about 300 people), and five additional rooms were built, expanding the mosque courtyard to more than 1,500 square meters.
