The South Grand Mosque is the principal mosque of the Jahriyya Sufi order in Xinjiang. The order reached the region in the Qianlong era; its leader Lu Zongde established a prayer hall at Erdaoqiao around 1870. The present mosque was funded and built around 1897 by Hai Zhanlong and others, and underwent a major reconstruction in 1919 under Ma Shaowu and other Jahriyya leaders. Built in classic Chinese brick-and-timber style rather than Central Asian form, it covers about 3,133 square metres, with a distinctive convex-plan main hall seating roughly 300 indoors and 500 more outside.

From the city centre head to the Erdaoqiao / Grand Bazaar area; the mosque lies in the lanes off Jiefang South Road nearby.
In the Erdaoqiao quarter of Tianshan District; reachable by Metro Line 1 to Erdaoqiao or a short taxi ride from downtown.
