📍 Kunming · Wuhua District 🏛️ Yuan/Ming origins; current building 1997-1998

📜 About & history

Nancheng ('South City') Mosque stands on Zhengyi Road just inside where the old Great South Gate of Kunming once was, a site linked to the introduction of Islam to Yunnan under the Yuan-dynasty governor Sayyid Ajall Shams al-Din. Rebuilt many times over the centuries, the old mosque was demolished in 1997 and the present multi-storey building completed in 1998. It is the central mosque of Kunming and one of the largest in Yunnan province. The mosque serves as the main venue for daily prayers, religious education, festivals and community life for the city's large Hui Muslim population. Its prominent central location makes it a landmark in Kunming's historic commercial heart.
