The Hantengri Mosque descends from the old 'South Gate Mosque' (Nanguan Mosque) first built in 1864 on Jiefang South Road and expanded in 1882. Because the earlier structure had deteriorated, it was decided in 1984 to rebuild it, moving the mosque slightly west; the new building was completed in 1988 and renamed Hantengri after Khan Tengri Peak in the Tian Shan. It is an unusual multi-storey tower-type mosque, with commercial space at ground level, living quarters, an upper prayer hall and a religious teaching floor. It is a prominent landmark of the south-gate quarter.

🚇 How to reach the mosque
- Line 1 Nanmen （南门）
On Jiefang South Road near the south gate; many city bus routes stop nearby — confirm route numbers locally.
From the city centre head south along Jiefang South Road to the south-gate (Nanmen) area; the tall tower-style mosque is easy to spot.
In the south-gate area of Tianshan District, a short taxi ride or one to two stops on Metro Line 1 (Nanmen) from the centre.
