三亚回辉清真古寺(海南首寺)
📍 Haikou · Fenghuang Town, Sanya 🏛️ 1470 (Ming Chenghua 6) 👥 over 1,000

📜 About & history

Haikou itself has no notable historic congregational mosque today — its old mosque was long abandoned, and Hainan's Muslim community (the distinct Utsul/Huihui people) is concentrated in the villages of Huihui and Huixin in Sanya, ~300 km south. Their flagship, the Huihui Ancient Mosque, was first built in 1470 (Ming Chenghua 6) and is the largest and best-known mosque in Hainan. It covers about 2.9 mu with a roughly 500 m² prayer hall in a blended Chinese-Western style and can hold over 1,000 worshippers. Around 10,000 local Muslims use it for daily worship, rising to 20,000–30,000 for major religious events.

Useful tip

Note: this is in Sanya, not Haikou — Haikou has only small prayer rooms and halal restaurants. If you must pray in Haikou, ask staff at a Hui/Lanzhou halal restaurant for the nearest prayer room. Taxi phrase (in Sanya): 请带我去三亚回辉清真古寺
