The Great Southern Mosque is the oldest mosque in Jinan and one of the notable early mosques of Chinese Islam. Originally in Wumanla Alley below Lishan Ding, it was moved to its present site west of Luoyuan Gate in 1295 (the Yuan Yuanzhen era). Its courtyard walls and prayer hall were built in the Ming Zhengtong era (1436), and the great hall, north and south lecture halls, ablution rooms and other buildings were enlarged in 1492. Facing east over roughly 10 mu with about 7,000 sq m of buildings, its main structures — screen wall, bangke (minaret) tower over the gate, moon-watching tower and great prayer hall — line up along an east-west axis.

🚇 How to reach the mosque
On Yongchang Street in the historic Hui quarter west of the old city; city buses along Jing'er Road and Wei'shi'er Road stop nearby, and it is an easy walk from the Kuanhouli area. A taxi from downtown is quick.
From Jinan Railway Station take a taxi about 10 minutes; from Jinan West high-speed station allow roughly 25-30 minutes by car to Yongchang Street.
About 1.5 km west of Quancheng Square and Baotu Spring, in the Hui neighbourhood famous for its halal food street; walkable from the old-town springs.
