The Great Mosque of Xi'an was established by imperial decree around 742 CE during the Tang dynasty, when Chang'an was the world's largest city. It was reconstructed several times, reaching its present form under the Ming dynasty's Hongwu Emperor, and is one of the largest premodern mosques in China.
