Jining Great East Mosque (Shunhe East Mosque)

济宁东大寺
📍 Jining · Rencheng District 🏛️ early Ming (early 15th c.)

📜 About & history

The Jining Great East Mosque, also called the Shunhe East Mosque, sits beside the Grand Canal at Xiaozhakou and dates from the early Ming dynasty, giving it a history of some 600 years. It took shape in the Chenghua era, was greatly enlarged under the Kangxi emperor and rebuilt by imperial grant under Qianlong to reach its present grand scale; tradition holds it was built by imperial decree in honour of the Hui general Hu Dahai. Facing east, the complex covers over 6,000 sq m with a building area of about 4,500 sq m, its main structures — entrance hall, great prayer hall and moon-watching tower — arrayed along an axis in a distinctly Chinese palace style fused with Arabic elements. Listed as a provincial protected relic in 1992 and a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 2006, it is ranked among China's five great classical-architecture mosques.
