Dongsheng Mosque was originally established in 1957 behind the site of the former No. 1 Middle School of Yikezhao League, but was damaged and ceased religious activity during the Cultural Revolution. Following the Party's Eleventh National Congress, the Ordos municipal government approved construction of a new mosque in 1990, on a 400-square-metre plot with a 353-square-metre building. As Ordos - Inner Mongolia's booming coal and gas city - saw its Muslim population grow substantially, the original mosque became insufficient, prompting local authorities to consider expansion or relocation.

Open for the five daily prayers and Friday Jumu'ah; ablution facilities are on site. Modest dress is required of non-Muslim visitors.

Ordos city bus routes stop along Wushen West Street and Tuanjie Road in Dongsheng District.
There is no dedicated Arab quarter in Ordos; Muslims head directly to the mosque, and Hui halal restaurants are available around Dongsheng.
The mosque lies within Dongsheng District, Ordos's traditional urban core, a few minutes by taxi from most hotels.
