Founded in 1404 in the Ming Yongle era on the west bank of the Grand Canal, the Southern Great Mosque is a Ming-Qing architectural complex that was repeatedly repaired and enlarged. Badly damaged in the Cultural Revolution, it was fully restored with state funds from 1978 and is a Hebei provincial protected cultural relic. It is one of Cangzhou's two great historic mosques alongside the Northern Great Mosque.

Central location on the west bank of the canal; short taxi ride from Cangzhou West high-speed rail station or the city centre.
Cangzhou is home to nearly 300,000 Hui Muslims; halal restaurants nearby. Chinese spoken.
