Taiyuan Ancient Mosque

太原清真古寺
📍 Taiyuan · Yingze District 🏛️ 785-805 (Tang Zhenyuan era, per stele)

📜 About & history

Originally called Qingxiu Temple, the Taiyuan Ancient Mosque is the city's oldest mosque and one of the best-preserved historic mosques in North China; a stele dates its founding to the Tang Zhenyuan era (785-805). It was rebuilt in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, and the present main structures are Ming-Qing work. The west-facing, two-courtyard complex covers about 2,120 sq m, with a gate, the Xingxin (省心) tower, a lecture hall and prayer hall on the axis. The hall's walls carry brightly coloured Arabic-style patterns and Quranic inscriptions, and the side pavilions hold stele calligraphy attributed to masters such as Huang Tingjian and Zhao Mengfu; it is a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit.
