Under the Law on Prohibiting Illegal Manufacture, Trading, Transportation and Possession of Guns (1996) and Article 125 of the Criminal Law: (1) unlicensed firearms possession: 3-15 years imprisonment; (2) manufacturing or selling illegal weapons: 10 years to death penalty in serious cases; (3) foreigners are completely prohibited from possessing firearms in China in any form. Even decorative weapons or spare parts are prohibited. Permitted: hunting for local athletes with very specific permits. Common situation for foreigners: discovery of a knife with a blade exceeding 10 cm in public requires a permit in some areas.

🎓 The lesson / takeaway

Do not enter China with any type of weapon. Ignorance of the law is not a defense. Even ceremonial knife replicas or war memorabilia may cause problems at customs.
