Quality Standards and Certifications Required for Import
Some products cannot be imported into your country without specific certificates. Not knowing this can get your goods held at customs and cause heavy losses.
The most important international certificates to know
1. CE (Conformité Européenne)
A mandatory European certificate for electronic and electrical products and toys aimed at European markets. Not mandatory for Gulf markets, but having it inspires confidence.
2. RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)
Proves that electronic products are free of hazardous substances. Required in some markets.
3. ISO 9001
The quality-management-system certificate. Its presence at a factory shows seriousness and method.
4. SASO (Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization)
Saudi requirements for some products imported into the Kingdom. Check the lists of products subject to assessment.
5. ESMA (Emirates Authority for Standardization)
The UAE equivalent — issues certificates for products imported into the UAE.
6. FCC (for products aimed at the United States)

1. Check the customs authority's website in your country
2. Consult a specialised customs broker
3. Contact your country's standards body in advance
What to request from the Chinese supplier
- Ask for copies of the certificates before ordering
- Verify them by contacting the issuing body directly (some certificates are forged)
- Ask for up-to-date, valid certificates (not expired)
