Certificate of Origin and Its Importance
The Certificate of Origin (CO) is an official document that proves in which country the goods were manufactured.
Why is it important?
1. Determining the duty rate: some countries have free-trade agreements that reduce duties on goods from a particular country
2. Meeting import requirements: some countries require it to import certain categories
3. Verifying origin: customs uses it to make sure the goods were not re-exported from a third country
Types of certificate of origin from China
1. Non-preferential CO
Issued by the Chinese chamber of commerce or Chinese customs. It only proves that the goods are of Chinese origin.
2. Preferential CO (Form E / ASEAN)
For countries that have a free-trade agreement with China under the ASEAN framework or others.
3. GSP certificate (Generalized System of Preferences)
Reduces duties in favour of developing countries.
How to request it from the supplier
The Chinese supplier can obtain it from:
- The China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT)
- Chinese customs (GACC)
A professional supplier knows how to issue it as a matter of course; ask for it explicitly.
Note: some Arab countries require the certificate of origin to be attested by the Arab embassy in China. Check the requirements of your specific country.
