Customs: How to Clear Your Goods Smoothly

Customs is the stage many new importers fear. But with a good understanding and correct documentation, it is just a routine procedure.

What is customs?
The government body that monitors goods entering your country and collects the prescribed duties. Every country has its own customs, but the principle is the same.

How does customs clearance work?
1. The goods arrive at the port or airport
2. The shipping documents are submitted to the customs authority
3. Customs inspection (the goods may be physically inspected or scanned)
4. Customs duty and VAT are paid
5. The goods are released

The customs broker
Most importers appoint a specialised customs broker or agent, who:
- Knows the correct HS codes for your products
- Files the declaration electronically
- Speeds up the process and avoids costly mistakes
- Costs USD 150–500 per shipment

How is customs duty calculated?
Customs duty = (value of the goods + freight + insurance) × duty rate
Example: goods USD 5,000 + freight USD 1,500 = taxable base USD 6,500
If the duty rate is 10% → duty = USD 650

Tips for faster clearance:
1. Make sure all documents are complete and accurate before the goods arrive
2. State the correct description of the goods — do not undervalue them (customs evasion is a crime)
3. Know your products' HS codes in advance
4. Choose a broker experienced with your type of goods
