Payment Methods for Chinese Suppliers

Choosing the right payment method protects your money and builds trust with the supplier.

1. Bank transfer (T/T — Telegraphic Transfer)
The most common. The importer usually pays 30% upfront and 70% before shipment or on receipt of the shipping documents.
- Advantage: fast and direct
- Risk: no protection if the supplier cheats you

2. Letter of credit (L/C)
The bank guarantees that the supplier is paid only if the shipping conditions are met.
- Advantage: full protection for the buyer
- Drawback: complex and costly (bank fees USD 500–2,000)
- Suited to: large deals above USD 50,000

3. Trade Assurance (Alibaba's guarantee)
Alibaba holds your money and releases it to the supplier only after you receive the goods and confirm you are satisfied.
- Advantage: excellent protection for small and medium deals
- Available only: with suppliers who carry the Trade Assurance badge on Alibaba

4. PayPal
Available with some suppliers for samples and small amounts.
- Advantage: easy and safe
- Drawback: high fees, and many suppliers do not accept it for bulk orders

5. Western Union / MoneyGram
Avoid them completely! They offer no protection and are the most common vehicle for fraud.

A safe payment strategy for beginners:
- Samples: PayPal or credit card
- Small orders (under USD 5,000): Trade Assurance on Alibaba
- Medium orders: T/T with 30% upfront + verify the supplier first
- Large orders: L/C
