Wuwei

Wuwei, historically known as Liangzhou, is an ancient Silk Road city on the Hexi Corridor of Gansu, long a strategic gateway between central China and the western regions. Its economy centres on irrigated agriculture, corn and wheat, animal husbandry and a notable wine-grape industry, as the surrounding desert-edge oases are among China's northern viticulture zones. The city is nationally famous as the place where the Bronze Galloping Horse, the emblem of Chinese tourism, was unearthed at the Leitai Han Tomb. Other treasures include the Tiantishan Grottoes, often called the ancestor of Chinese cave temples, the Kumarajiva Pagoda commemorating the great Buddhist translator, and a well-preserved Confucian temple. For an international student, Wuwei offers deep Silk Road history, striking desert-and-oasis scenery, a strong Hui and Han cultural mix and low living costs.
