Maqin is the seat of Golog (Guoluo) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in southern Qinghai, high on the Tibetan Plateau near the sacred, snow-capped Amne Machin range. A remote, sparsely populated Tibetan region above 3,700 metres, it is a center of nomadic herding culture. Its climate is a harsh alpine one with long, bitterly cold winters.
