Lu'an lies in western Anhui at the foot of the Dabie Mountains, a green, water-rich region of reservoirs and forests. It is best known for Lu'an Guapian, a flat, seedless green tea ranked among China's top ten famous teas. The Tiantangzhai scenic area straddles the Anhui-Hubei border with waterfalls, gorges and old-growth forest. The Dabie range was an important base of the Chinese communist revolution, and the city preserves numerous red-tourism sites. High-speed rail on the Hefei-Wuhan corridor connects Lu'an with both provincial capitals.
