Jiagedaqi is the administrative seat of Daxing'anling Prefecture in the far north of Heilongjiang, at the southern edge of the Greater Khingan (Da Hinggan) Mountains. A forestry town in one of China's coldest inhabited regions, it serves as the gateway to the northern taiga. Its climate is cold-temperate and continental, with very long, severe winters.
