Artux is the seat of Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture in western Xinjiang, on the edge of the Tarim Basin just north of Kashgar. It is the heartland of China's Kyrgyz population, ringed by the Pamir and Tian Shan mountains. Its climate is a cold desert one: very dry, with hot summers and cold winters.
