Wang Jinyu led Foton's 1996 founding, pioneering a cross-ownership joint-stock model backed by nearly 100 legal entities, and served as General Manager until resigning for health reasons in 2017. The group has been chaired by Chang Rui since 2022 as part of BAIC Group.
📖 About the company
Foton (Beiqi Foton) is China's most product-diverse commercial-vehicle maker, founded in 1996 in Beijing with state backing as an early mixed-ownership reform experiment. It grew through joint ventures with Cummins (engines), Daimler (Auman trucks) and Piaggio (European light commercial vehicles), and exports heavily to the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, with local assembly in South Africa, Pakistan, Colombia and Cambodia. One striking fact: Foton also manufactures in North Korea through the Samhung joint venture, where its vehicles are sold under the Chonji marque. It is now betting on new-energy vehicles through the Cavan sub-brand launched with Bosch and SinoHytec in late 2024. The Tunland pickup is the star of its exports to Arab and African markets.
