Ulansuhai Lake

Ulansuhai, Mongolian for "red willow lake", lies in Urad Front Banner, Bayannur, at the top of the great northern bend of the Yellow River. It is an oxbow-type lake formed after the river changed course, fed by the Wujia River and drainage from the Hetao irrigation area, and usually covers about 293 square kilometres. The largest natural wetland at its latitude and a key point on a global bird-migration route, it regulates Yellow River flow and purifies its water, earning the name "natural kidney" of the river. It was listed as a wetland of international importance in 2002.
