The house Sun Yat-sen, father of modern China and founder of the Republic of China, designed himself and had built in 1892 with funds sent by his elder brother Sun Mei from Honolulu, in Cuiheng Village where he was born in 1866. The two-storey building blends Chinese and Western architectural styles and now anchors a wider heritage tourist zone that includes a modern museum tracing his revolutionary career. The memorial hall opened to the public in 1985 and is the only State Council-protected cultural relic of its kind in Zhongshan, located about 20 km from the city centre and 30 km from Macau.
